Welcome to the Birchanger website! I’m Verena from year 6 am I’m going to give you an understanding of this school if you are thinking about coming here. I have been coming here since Reception.
In Birchanger we have 4 school values which are; Love, Care, Courage and Truth which we represent every day. We are also committed to the pursuit of excellence in our work, play and relationships with each other.
We do a variety of subjects at school which we enjoy very much. On a daily basis at school we learn English, Maths, spellings and times tables. On the first day of a new term we do a lesson on mental health and wellbeing, this lesson is when we learn about how a small worry can turn into a bigger worry and how to get rid of it. On Friday we have an assembly (parents can come) it is called a Celebration assembly, we show work that we are proud of and some certificates are given out.
In October year 5 & 6 go on a residential trip for 5 days, it’s so much fun! If a class goes on a school trip it’s usually linked to a subject they are learning about at school so it helps us with our work when we get back. The residential trip is the best experience you’ll ever have, I have been twice and it’s brilliant!
World War 1
In Birchanger our focused topic last term was World War 1. We have learnt about how the war started, the Battle of the Somme, trenches and the Christmas truce. A man from Portals to the Past came in and showed us interesting artefacts from 1916 and gave us some amazing information. After we planned diary entries from a soldiers point of view and described the tough conditions they had to go through. We also wrote letters to soldiers which passed away to say thank you for the sacrifices they made for us. This World War 1 topic was really intriguing and fun to learn about, we are now very knowledgeable about it.
Year 6’s have a responsibility to look after the Reception children when they first start and don’t know what to do in school. We care for our buddies in the playground when they feel lonely. Each year 6 has their own buddy and sometimes we get a treat and we spend our afternoon in their classroom to help the teacher out. We also read stories to them and help the tackle tricky words.
Mrs McArthur’s mouth-watering school dinners will make you want more each time. Birchanger C of E Primary School is truly charming and I would recommend it as we ‘learn to love and love to learn’. We try our best every day and stay cheerful even on a grey day! This school is small yet unique and it will leave you smiling. All years in this school are confident to ask for help. You will definitely have the best time here.
